Young people are at the heart of Scouting, but without adult volunteers to lead, assist, guide, instruct and support the group they would not be able to enjoy the wonderful adventures that are on offer. Our adult volunteers do a wonderful job of delivering great experiences to our young people. The roles that they take up all contribute to the ultimate goal of safe and enjoyable adventure. Some examples of these roles are:
Leadership: Uniformed volunteers leading the young people in meetings, activities and on camps. They give their time to plan and deliver some wonderful activities and make the same promise as the young people of the group. Leaders undergo training throughout their time in the movement and have the privilege of spending most time with the young people.
Occasional Helpers / Skills Instructors: Those who have less time to spare but have the drive, skill and determination to help out with the running of a section or activity are able to do so without committing to a full time role. They can be instrumental in helping the leaders to deliver their programme.
Administrative / Management: There are roles within the group to support the running of the group and sections. These roles do not require volunteers to run meetings or take young people to camp, but they are vital to Scouting. Examples are secretary, treasurer, chairman, fundraising coordinator etc.
Parental Volunteers: Parents are able to take up the roles listed above, but in addition to this, simply volunteering their time on an ad-hoc basis can really help the appointed members of the team and help to create a fantastic sense of community within the group, which is invaluable. Each section has parent representatives on the group executive committee, who are pivotal to the decision making processes and running of the group.
